Solheim Cup: Can Nelly Lead Team US To Victory?

World No 1 Nelly Korda is determined to help the US wrest the title away from Europe, which has held the trophy for three straight tournaments.

The US contingent, which includes World No 2 Lilia Vu along with Allison Lee, Megan Khang and Lexi Thompson, will be guided for the second straight year by team captain Stacy Lewis.

Last year in Spain, the US and Europe played to a 14-14 tie, the first in the event's history. The tie allowed captain Suzann Pettersen and the Europeans to retain the title.

The US hasn't won the event since capturing its second straight Cup in 2017.

Korda, who has six victories on the LPGA Tour this season -- including a record-tying five in a row -- would love to see the US team form a cohesive unit that can rely on every member, not just the elite players.

📌 Family Mojo: Last month, Nelly Korda’s younger brother Sebastian won the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, 32 years after his father won the same title, then known as the Sovran Bank Classic. They became the first father-son duo to win the same ATP event.

Could the DC area bring Korda some badly needed Solheim fortune?

Korda’s overall Solheim record is 7-4-1. The 26-year-old has yet to play on a winning team in three consecutive appearances.

📌 Rookie Week: Esther Henseleit is one of the four rookies in this year’s Solheim Cup, with each team fielding two in Virginia. She is joined by Albane Valenzuela, the first Swiss player to ever play in a Solheim, and Americans Lauren Coughlin and Sarah Schmelzel.

Henseleit, winner of the silver medal at the Paris Olympics, played her way onto the team via the European Solheim Cup points standings. She’ll have her boyfriend, Reece Phillips, on the bag this week.

Tiger Leads Secret PGA-PIF Meet

The PGA TOUR and Tiger Woods are in New York meeting with the Saudi Public Investment Fund today to iron out a deal for a more than $1 billion injection that could potentially end division in professional golf and create a new for-profit golf entity.

The meetings are looked at as a major development because the PGA TOUR and the PIF announced over a year ago that they had come to a preliminary agreement. A deadline of December 31, 2023, was expected to help get a deal done, but this did not work. It was extended to April, but still, the two sides could not come to terms.

As for Woods, he is in New York to also visit Liberty National for the Nexus Cup, benefitting the Tiger Woods Foundation.

⛳️ Rory In Action: Rory McIlroy will be headlining the field for this week’s Amgen Irish Open on the DP World Tour.

For the first time since 2015, Royal County Down, considered one of the best golf courses in the world, will host a DP World Tour event. This will mark just the fourth time that the Newcastle, Northern Ireland layout will host the Irish Open, doing so in 1928, 1935 and 2015.

Joining McIlroy in this week’s field are Shane Lowry, Bob MacIntyre, Nicolai Hojgaard and Tom McKibbin, the 21-year-old who grew up on the same course as McIlroy, Holywood Golf Club outside of Belfast.
