ALBATROSS
Rory Chooses Ireland Over Great Britain @ Olympics

Rory McIlroy will represent Ireland at the Olympics for the second time in his career in Paris after narrowly missing out on winning the bronze at Tokyo in 2021.

The Northern Ireland-born star's choice to represent Ireland rather than Great Britain at the last Olympics sparked much debate but he will continue to stick to his choice.

With the unique position of Northern Irish athletes being eligible to represent either Great Britain or Ireland, Rory McIlroy faced a tough choice for the Tokyo Olympics. He eventually chose Ireland since he represented the country in his junior and amateur days.

"Once I left trying not to upset anyone aside, then it was actually a pretty easy decision. The decision was I'm going to play golf for the country or the nation that I've always played for through my junior and amateur days and now into the professional game. And that's Ireland", said Rory, explaining his decision.”

He'll tee off in the Olympics on August 1 at Le Golf National.

📉 The Open TV Ratings Prove Rory Right: Rory McIlroy's concerns about dwindling TV ratings for golf's biggest events appear to be justified as the Open drew in its lowest viewership in nearly a decade. The 3.39 million who tuned in represented the smallest draw for the event since 2015, with this saw its worst ratings in nearly a decade on Sunday and a four per cent drop on the previous year.

These numbers are in line with the warnings issued by McIlroy about the dwindling interest in golf's major prizes in terms of viewing figures. Rory believes that the fighting and everything that had happened over the past couple of years, people are getting fatigued, and it is turning people off from men's professional golf, which is not a good thing for anyone.

A vocal critic of stars who had defected to the LIV Golf tour previously, McIlroy does appear to be seeing the bigger picture these days. The four-time major championships victor has admitted that he wants to see the game itself going from strength to strength in spite of the civil war which has ensued in the last few years.

Is Tiger Softening Stance On LIV Golf?

Photo: Imago | Source: NBC Sports

Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau have rekindled their friendship after two years of no contact after the two-time Major Champion defected to LIV Golf. Woods had ended dialogue with many players who had left the PGA TOUR to go to LIV Golf, as did other TOUR loyal players like Rory McIlroy.

Woods had made it clear and drew a line in the sand with many players who decided to leave the TOUR. Text messages went without an answer and relationships were on ice, but it seems time does heal all wounds.

DeChambeau apparently had a visit from Woods on the range at The Open Championship, where the two talked and Woods complimented Bryson’s influence on the game. It appears some forgiveness has been shown by Woods, and things may be on the up-and-up between them.

📌 Bryson*Trump Tops YouTube Ratings: Bryson DeChambeau's latest online video with former US President Donald Trump has become the top trending video on YouTube. Given the current political climate and the impending US election it's an astonishing video for DeChambeau to release - which is reflected in the massive numbers it attracted to make it the No 1 trending video on YouTube with over 3.6m views in 17 hours.

DeChambeau and the huge golf fanatic former President took on Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey, where Trump labelled his playing partner as the best in the world.

The 45th US President also talked about his own golfing ability, including saying he made his eighth hole-in-one with South African four-time Major champion Ernie Els watching on.

Golf @ Olympics 2024: All You Need To Know

It's the Olympics week and today we explore everything golf at the Paris 2024 Olympics. With stars like Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, and Nelly Korda set to tee it up - here are a few things you must know.

⛳️ Familiar Course: When you lock into the golf on August 1, you might recognize some of the holes - the tournaments will take place at Le Golf National just outside of Paris.

The venue hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup, a 17.5-10.5 win in favor of the Europeans. McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Alex Noren, and Thornbjørn Oleson were all members of that European team who will be playing in the Olympics.

⛳️ Golf's Brief History: The 2024 event is the fifth time in history that golf will be played at the Olympics.

The first two were in 1900 and 1904, followed by a 112-year drought until it came back in 2016. The 1900 Olympics were also held in France at the Compiègne Club.

⛳️ Format: Golf at the Olympics has two events; A men’s strokeplay tournament and a women’s strokeplay tournament. Both events will be structured the same as a regular PGA or LPGA Tour event with four 18-hole rounds played over four days.

The fields both feature 60 players and no cut after 36 holes. That means that regardless of how they play, all of the star players will be around until the final putt drops.

⛳️ Star Power: The Americans swept the gold medals at the Tokyo Games in 2021 - Xander Schauffele won the men’s side and Nelly Korda won on the women’s side. Both players had the best seasons of their careers in 2024 and come in with a great chance to defend their titles.

Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark are the other US competitors in the men's event while Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang complete the women's team.

⛳️ LIV Golf's Presence: There will be LIV players in the field, including Spain’s Jon Rahm, Chile’s Joaquin Niemann and Mito Pereria, and Mexico’s Abraham Ancer.

Many star LIV players, like Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka, will not be participating due to their tour. The qualification system used the Official World Golf Rankings, which does not award LIV points.
