Plus: The best putting drill from the greatest

Good morning. As we gear up for the tournaments this week, let’s also celebrate us - the everyday golfers and fans that drive the sport!

Reply to this email and send in your best golf shot (a picture you took, but pun intended too). We’ll feature the best ones in our newsletter and your chance for a bit of fame 😁!

⛳ This day in history: On this date in 1930, Glenna Collett led an American squad against a British team at Sunningdale, England, in a precursor to the first Curtis Cup Match played two years later. The British won the 1930 match.

Greg Norman Isn’t Invited To The Open

Norman, a two-time Open winner, wasn’t invited to the champions dinner at the 150th Open in 2022 when Cameron Smith won, with golf’s war at its fiercest, to “ensure that the focus remains on celebrating the championship”.

This year Norman had to buy a ticket to go to the Masters to “support” his LIV players, via the resale market, confirming in Adelaide last week that it “wasn’t cheap”.

Norman is not on any official invite lists for the Open this year either and with the tournament already a sellout, R&A corporate communications director Mike Woodcock told reporters at a media day that the Shark was “welcome” but could need to find his own way to the event in July.

Tiger Woods Launches ‘Athluxury’ Brand

Tiger Woods is officially (and finally, phew 😅) launching his new lifestyle brand, Sun Day Red, to the public today, after teasing the collection for months. Woods will also wear the line at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Country Club in Louisville, Ky., slated for May 13-19.

The first release, which will be men’s only, is called “The Hunt,” and will be a preview of the colors he will be wearing at the Louisville tournament, one of golf’s four majors.

Key pieces in the collection include the Training Dry Hoodie, which fulfills Woods’ need for a lightweight piece he could wear on the range, TaylorMade said, as well as the 3D Lightweight Hoodie, one of the first things the golfer said he wanted from his collection.

The hoodies will retail for $150.

Additional menswear releases will drop later in the month and a small women’s collection will be offered next year with a full launch expected in 2026.

Kris Kim vs Charlie Woods: Battle of the Star Kids

A few are ready to carry forward the legacy of their parents. Probably the most famous of them all would be Charlie Woods. Another prodigal teenager, Kris Kim, whose mother, Ji-Hyun Suh, graced the LPGA circuit back in the 90s, has been the talk of the golf town.

Charlie Woods

In February, Charlie Woods took his first step towards making his PGA Tour debut possible, in the pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic. He couldn’t qualify for the event and his performance was also heavily scrutinized by the audience.

Woods made another attempt by competing at the U.S. Open qualifier, where he once again met with disappointment as he failed to qualify.

According to the PGA Tour, he has a +3 handicap with the Florida State Golf Association.

Kris Kim

In 2023, Kim won the MacGregor Trophy and the Boys’ Amateur Championship. One other glorious win that grabbed the headlines was his outstanding debut performance at the Junior Ryder Cup 2023, which helped his team triumph over the US team.

Three years ago, his handicap score was +3.1. The 16-year-old Kris Kim became the first amateur to be sponsored by the CJ Group last year, in May.

After a year, he has now gotten the privilege of receiving an invitation to play along with 156 players in Texas at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson ahead of his GCSE exams.
