The US Open 2024 Preview

The United States Open Championship, commonly referred to as the US Open, is the annual national golf championship in the United States. It is the third of the four major championships in men's golf and is part of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour.

Since 1898, the competition has followed a format of 72 holes of stroke play, spread over four rounds on an 18-hole course, with the winner having the lowest total stroke count. Organized by the United States Golf Association (USGA), the US Open takes place in mid-June, typically concluding on the third Sunday, barring any weather interruptions. The tournament is hosted at various courses, each designed to be exceptionally challenging, emphasizing the importance of precise driving.

The 2024 United States Open Championship will mark the 124th edition of the US Open, the national golf championship of the United States. This 72-hole stroke play tournament is scheduled to take place from June 13 to 16 at course number 2 of the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Notably, this event will also be the 1,000th championship staged by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in its history.

Venue Details

Pinehurst No 2, this year's venue, is the most renowned course at Pinehurst Resort, opened in 1907 and was designed by Donald Ross, who refined it until his death in 1948. The course is famous for its challenging green complexes, with many crowned greens causing missed shots to roll off, leaving difficult chips. Johnny Miller famously compared landing a shot on a Pinehurst green to "trying to hit a ball on top of a VW Beetle."

Originally without long rough, a 1974 redesign by RT Jones added thick Bermuda rough, which was removed in a 2010 restoration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to restore Ross's original design. Now, the course features hardpan sand and native scrub bordering the fairways. Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted numerous significant tournaments, including four men's majors and three US Amateurs. Upcoming US Opens are scheduled for 2024, 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047 under a partnership with the USGA, designating Pinehurst as its first "anchor site."

The course is currently grassed with Tifway Bermuda tees and fairways and Champion Ultradwarf greens. Golf Digest ranked it the 29th best course in the US and 6th best public course, while Golf Magazine named it the 11th best in the country and the best in North Carolina.
