Today’s Trivia: In which year was the only ever men's Golf team event held at the Olympics? Answer at the end of the email.
⛳ This day in history: The second PGA Championship to be played at stroke play ended on this date in 1959. Bob Rosburg scorched Minneapolis Golf Club with a final-round 66, allowing him a one-shot victory over Doug Sanders and Jerry Barber, who would win the title two years later.

Schauffele On Track To Defend Olympic Gold

Hideki Matsuyama fired a bogey-free, 8-under-par 63 in the first round at Le Golf National to take a two-shot lead. Following closely behind Matsuyama is Open champion and defending gold medal winner Xander Schauffele, who shot a 6-under 65 to put himself in solo second place entering the second round.
World No 1 Scottie Scheffler is in good shape after his 4-under 67 while Rory McIlroy is in the hunt after his 3-under 68.
Schauffele and Scheffler are in the best positions to find the podium for Team USA, but Collin Morikawa (-1) could also be in the mix if he can go low on Friday. Wyndham Clark, the fourth and final member of the American team, is in second-to-last place after a dreadful, 4-over 75.
⛳️ Stellar Crowd In Paris: An estimated 30,000 fans showed up at Le Golf National on the first day of play. Every player raved about the atmosphere during the opening round, even those from countries that many consider rivals to the hosts.
So much for the “golf doesn’t belong in the Olympics” crowd.
🚀 Xander's Strong Start: Xander Schauffele is arguably the hottest golfer in the world right now. He’s also the defending gold medalist. Not a bad combination to have at the Olympics. And once again, Schauffele is near the top of the leaderboard at one of the biggest events of the year.
📍Home Favorites: Host France has two players in the men’s golf field, Victor Perez and Matthieu Pavon. Perez had the honor of hitting the opening tee shot.
Perez opened in a respectable 1-under 70, while Pavon, who won the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year, shot an even-par 71 on Thursday.

Do Olympic-Winning Caddies Get Medals?

A half-dozen more medals will be handed out at Le Golf National this week with the men going first between Thursday 1st and Sunday 4th and the women teeing it up at the same location between Wednesday 7th to Saturday 10th.
But what about their caddies - do they earn a medal as well? Well, the short answer is - no, caddies do not pick up a medal if they are attached to a golfer who ends up on the podium.
Golf is among the 31 other sports at this year's Summer Olympics which does not reward the player's most-trusted ally.
đź“Ś Xander's Gift To His Caddie: 2020 men's Olympic gold medallist Xander Schauffele took matters into his own hands last time and presented his caddie, Austin Kaiser with a gold ring - similar in size and style to the piece of jewellery SuperBowl champions receive - with the Olympics symbol engraved on top.
It also had the words: "United States Olympic Team" around the top-facing edge with the American flag just above the Olympic rings. He keeps it on a special shelf in his office at home in San Diego, along with the flags from the 18th hole at tournaments Schauffele has won.
Back in 2016, Matt Kuchar won the bronze in Rio and gave his medallion "Order of Ikkos" to caddie John Wood, who broke down in tears when Kuchar put it around his neck.

What else is making news
LPGA Tour: Polly Mack of Germany shot a career-best 63 to lead after Round 1 of the Portland Classic.
Senior Women's Open: JoAnne Carner shot her age with a 14-over 85 in the first round of the US Senior Women's Open at Fox Chapel. She is tied for 110th in the 120-player field.
Woods Wins: Charlie Woods impressively bounced back from a disappointing debut in the United States Junior Amateur, winning the South Florida Jr. PGA Cup in his native Florida. The 54-hole event featured 88 of the top junior golfers in the world.
Player Sues: PGA Tour legend Gary Player alleges a replica of the claret jug from his 1974 Open Championship and one of his Masters trophies have been auctioned off without his approval - he has sued the auction house.
New Ambassador: Under Armour announced Christo Lamprecht as the latest player to sign with the apparel brand, joining Jordan Spieth, Maverick McNealy and others.

What Is Wyndham Clark's Special Olympic Diet?
Photo: Reuters | Source: Yardbarker Golf
Wyndham Clark has been following a special diet to bite into the gold at Le Golf National in his Olympic debut. Although he hasn't made a good start at Le Golf National, if he ends up winning a medal, his diet might become the golden benchmark.
🥗 To be a massive force on the course, he needs fuel that comes from something that’s gluten-free, particularly oats. It seems like a bowl of oats with some fruits like bananas, berries, and some granola happens to be the go-to choice.
For the pre-round diet, Clark likes to keep it light with a bottle of water with electrolytes to take afterward.
🥗 During the round he eats carbs more with applesauce for a balanced sugar level. One might notice Clark chewing on a gluten-free almond butter sandwich, a protein bar, nuts, and jerky from time to time during the rounds.
🥗 Post-round, the 3-time PGA Tour winner loads up on protein salad with starches and grains mixed with it. And although his day eating is light, Clark loads up on dinner with a typical plate of fish with rice and veggies and calls it a “clean and boring” diet.
One thing that Clark avoids at all costs is eating a huge amount of food at one time. He explained that doing that messes up sugar levels and a lot of food can deteriorate his focus and throw him off. Another thing that’s a constant in Clark’s diet is tacos. He could be a Tacos connoisseur at this point, as his Instagram stories bear witness to his love for the Mexican specialty.
The stable diet has worked for Clark in the past, as he has picked up some wins on the PGA Tour. It remains to be seen if it will give him enough energy to battle it out at the Summer Olympics and grab a gold.
