Team US won all five four-ball matches on the opening day of the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club. The 5-0 count marked the first sweep of a four-ball session for the US since the 1994 Presidents Cup.

The most dominant round came from Russell Henley and World No 1 Scottie Scheffler as they secured a 3-and-2 victory over South Korea's Tom Kim and Sungjae Im.

Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele gave the US its first point with a 1-up victory on South Korea's Byeong Hun An and Australia's Jason Day.

Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala, who's in his first international team competition representing the US, topped Australians Adam Scott and Min Woo Lee 1 up.

Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark never trailed and took the lead for good on the 13th hole to edge South Africa's Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Canada's Taylor Pendrith 1 up.

Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns finished the sweep by winning 2 and 1 against Canada's Corey Conners and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.

Why The International Team Has A Shield Logo

The International Team shield logo was first introduced by former captain Ernie Els ahead of the 2019 Presidents Cup. The black and gold shield appeared in cities like Tokyo, Cape Town and Melbourne under the motto “The Shield Unites Us”, and was a rallying cry for golf fans to unite behind the International team.

After taking over as Internationals captain from Nick Price following the 2017 Presidents Cup, Els commissioned a new logo for the team with the hope of inspiring his side to bounce back from an embarrassing 19-11 defeat to Team US at Liberty National Golf Club.

While the Internationals failed to break their drought against the Americans in 2019, Els’ logo stuck and has been embraced by the team.

Taking inspiration from military shield patches, Els and artist Jeff Costa – who has designed logos for various sports teams – came up with a fresh identity for the International Team.

They wanted a logo that had three elements: “flags that symbolized both golf and patriotism”, “a shield to represent strength, security and defense”, and a “Celtic knot representing unity, faith and loyalty”.

They ultimately landed on the black and gold design, with Els unveiling the logo during the week of the 2018 US Open.

5 Signs You're No Longer A Beginner

At some point on your golfing journey, you lose that ‘beginner’ tag. There’s no official point when you reach the next level, but here are a few signs that you’ve left your learner plates behind.

📌 You Stop Worrying About Being Watched: When you’re new to golf, it can be quite intimidating have a group of golfers coming up behind you. At first it can feel like everyone is watching you, and you’d do anything to get your shot away before the group behind catches you up on the tee.

In time, you start to care less about playing a poor shot in front of people.

📌 You Don't Tee The Ball Up So High: Quite often, new players will tee the ball up a few inches high when hitting an iron. Then you realise you’re not hitting the center of the clubface, and that having at the ball teed up high doesn’t work when you’re looking to hit down on the ball with an iron.

You start to think less about getting the ball airborne, and more about the strike.

📌 You Talk Like A Golfer: It doesn’t take long to get bitten by the golf bug, and before long you’re talking like you’ve been playing the game for years. Suddenly you’re a golf course architect and a swing expert, and you’re using phrases that, six months ago, would have been completely foreign.

📌 You Learn To Pick Up: It doesn’t take long to get bitten by the golf bug, and before long you’re talking like you’ve been playing the game for years. Suddenly you’re a golf course architect and a swing expert, and you’re using phrases that, six months ago, would have been completely foreign.

📌 You Don't Obsess Over Finding Your Ball: We’ve all been that player would couldn’t accept a ball being lost. When you’re starting out, you’re so keen to register your score that you’ll look long and hard for it, often when there is absolutely no hope whatsoever of it being found.

The game teaches you to move on – as do your playing partners.
