PGA Tour Set For Massive Overhaul

The PGA Tour is set to make multiple changes to make the game more exciting and to maintain the interest of top professionals amid competition from Saudi-backed LIV Golf. These potential tweaks were recently discussed in the 16-member Players Advisory Council and could come into effect as early as 2026.

⛳️ Field Size: The Tour's Player advisory council has agreed to reduce the field size to 120 players for all events. Currently, 156 players is the field size of the regular non-signature event.

⛳️ Exemptions: 125 players currently receive exemptions on the Tour, and if the new rule comes into effect, the Tour will reduce that number to 100 or even less.

⛳️ Promotions: Limiting the field size will also affect exempt players, as well as the number of Q-School and Korn Ferry Tour graduates. The promotions from these categories are likely to reduce.

⛳️ The Tiger Effect: Tiger Woods will receive a special exemption for all Signature events starting from 2025. This means he will be eligible to play in all eight high-purse events.

⛳️ Signature Events: Starting from 2025, all Signature Events will feature at least 72 players in the field. This year, there were a few events that did not have 72 players due to withdrawals by certain players.

This Is How Scheffler Measures Up To Prime Tiger

Photo: Imago | Source: NBC Sports

With his Travelers triumph, Scottie Scheffler secured his sixth title before July, becoming the first since Tiger Woods to win six times in a calendar year and the first since Arnold Palmer to do so before July. This feat eluded even Woods. Scheffler's sixth victory in 15 starts has produced impressive stats.

But is the current world No 1 better than Woods, as some suggest?

πŸ“Œ While both Scheffler and Woods won six times in their first 15 starts, Scheffler has 10 more rounds in the 60s than Woods' 30. Scheffler has 13 top-10s compared to Woods' 12.

Additionally, Scheffler's 583 world ranking points surpass Woods' by 51. Scheffler's FedEx Cup lead this season, over 2000 points, is the best since 2009.

πŸ“Œ Woods' total strokes gained are far better than Scheffler's though. The 15-time major champion set a record victory margin at the 2000 US Open, beating Ernie Els by 15 shots and being the only player to break par at 12 under.

πŸ“Œ Woods has won six times in a calendar year twice and exceeded that four times: seven wins in 2007, eight in 1999 and 2006, and nine in 2000. His sustained success keeps him ahead of most. Scheffler needs a standout finish this season to match Woods' 2000 campaign.

Scheffler has shown better consistency than any of his peers at their peak, finishing outside the top 10 only twice in his 15 starts. He is expected to play in five more tournaments this year.

While he appears to be the future king of golf, his coronation will need a few more years.
