These Are The Most Controversial Moments In PGA Championship History

Source: Essentially Sports

The PGA Championship is only three days away from raising its curtains at the Valhalla Golf Club. As we gear up for an epic showdown, take a look at the most notable controversial incidents in the history of the tournament.

⛳️ Mickelson's Rule Confusion (2023): Phil Mickelson hit into a water hazard at Oak Hills Golf Club's sixth. He took a penalty drop but was interrupted due to a 2023 rule change, requiring him to hit from the first cut rough, sparking widespread interest in the golf world.

⛳️ Johnson Robbed (2010): Dustin Johnson's tee shot at Whistling Straits' 18th landed in a bunker, where he grounded his club, unaware it was part of the course. A rule change in 2010 designated all sand areas as bunkers, leading to a two-stroke penalty for Johnson, robbing him of a Major victory.

⛳️ Mickelson Absent (2022): Phil Mickelson joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf early on, facing backlash after disparaging comments about the PGA Tour surfaced in Alan Shipnuck's book. Criticized heavily, he lost sponsorships, including KPMG, and apologized, opting out of defending his title at the 2022 PGA Championship to reflect on his actions.

⛳️ Woods vs May (2000): Tiger Woods won his third major after a playoff with Bob May. During the playoff's third hole, Woods hit his drive into the rough, where his ball mysteriously changed direction. Despite controversy, he capitalized on the clearer drop to secure victory with a birdie putt, while May missed his chance.

⛳️ Koepka vs DeChambeau (2021): The feud between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau intensified in 2021, with Koepka mocking DeChambeau's lack of major wins and DeChambeau poking fun at Koepka's physique. The tension escalated when Koepka rolled his eyes during a Golf Channel interview as DeChambeau passed by, supposedly irritated by the noise of DeChambeau's spikes.

The two have moved on from their past rivalry, but it remains one of the most iconic moments of the PGA Championship.
